Our consultant surgeons are supported by cardiac anaesthetists, nursing staff, allied health professionals and clerical staff.
Our services
We perform a variety surgery as routine or as an emergency, including:
- Coronary artery bypass surgery
- Heart valve replacement and repair surgery
- Surgery for aneurysms of the thoracic aorta
- Surgery for abnormal heart rhythms
- Removal of cardiac tumours
Following surgery, you may be referred to the cardiac rehabilitation service
Urgent cardiac surgery
This fast-track service provides prompt assessment and care for unstable and critically ill patients who need urgent cardiac surgery.

Referrals to the service
We care for patients who have:
- Chest pain (unstable angina)
- (Heart attack) and its serious complications
- Acute valvular heart conditions requiring urgent surgery
- Infections involving the heart valves (Infective endocarditis)
- Atrial Myxomas (cardiac tumours)
Referral process
Another hospital will normally refer you this service, or your GP could make a referral.
An online referral form will be completed by the hospital you are currently in. One of our nurses will assess the referral, followed by the lead consultant.
If you need surgery, you will be given information about arrangements and transferred to the Freeman Hospital
