Also called a diagnostic semen analysis, this procedure helps to understand sperm health.
This includes:
- Sperm concentration – the number of sperm in the sample
- Motility – how well the sperm move
- Morphology – the shape and structure of the sperm
These results help us determine whether a male factor may be contributing to difficulties in conceiving naturally.
The quality of a sample can vary from one test to another. Because of this, you may be asked to provide more than one sample, especially if the first result falls outside the usual range. This is completely normal and helps us make the most accurate assessment possible.
Our team will guide you through each step and explain what your results mean for your care and treatment options.
How to arrange a semen analysis appointment
You can request a referral for semen testing through your GP. Once your appointment has been arranged, you’ll be asked to produce a sample at the Fertility Centre so our team can carry out the analysis.
We understand that providing a sample in the clinic isn’t always possible. If this is the case, please let us know and we can make alternative arrangements to support you.
Abstinence period
To help us carry out an accurate assessment of your sperm quality, it is important that you abstain from sexual intercourse or masturbation for at least 48 hours, but no longer than 7 days before to your appointment.
Less than 48 hours of abstinence may reduce the number of sperm in the sample, while waiting longer than 7 days can have a negative effect on sperm movement and quality. Keeping within this timeframe gives us the clearest and most reliable results.
Andrology Laboratory hours
An Andrology Laboratory is the part of a fertility centre that specialises in testing and processing sperm. There are predetermined appointment times for diagnostic semen analysis.
