Providing a breadth of experience to facilitate development of all medical professions, creating a resilient, skilled and balanced workforce. We aim to consistently achieve excellence and drive development in healthcare for generations.
Newcastle Hospitals is the biggest teaching NHS trust in the north east of England.
We have a large number of specialist services and therefore offer unique undergraduate and postgraduate experiences in the delivery of care to our local, national and international communities.
Dr Ifti Haq is our director of medical education and works alongside Dr Ian Baxter and Dr Ian Forrest to oversee undergraduate and postgraduate training.
Undergraduate medical education
The undergraduate medical education team are responsible for all medical education on the MBBS programme at Newcastle University and the MBChB course with the University of Sunderland. We support clinical experience in the early years of education and provide education and apprenticeships as medical students progress towards graduation.
The team work alongside our allied universities to deliver comprehensive clinical skills and training whilst supporting students through their studies and exams, as well as providing pastoral support and professional development.
The MBBS programme at Newcastle University has been designed to include a greater focus on integrated teaching within the clinical environment, with a move towards longitudinal assistantships . As such, our responsibility to include undergraduate medical students within our clinical teams and everyday activities has become central to our combined success.
Our bespoke education and training centres at Eldon Court (city centre) and Freeman Hospital, alongside simulation centres at both sites, offer excellent classroom, real-life experience and study spaces – including operating theatre and ward replicas – to support teaching, learning and examinations.
Medical electives at Newcastle Hospitals
We welcome students into Newcastle Hospitals from a variety of other universities locally, nationally or internationally.
In order to ensure that all students are well supported and undergo the necessary registrations and checks for safe working we ask that all students register for an elective through Newcastle University via the Newcastle electives email address [email protected].
You will require a clinical supervisor who is a consultant (https://www.newcastle-hospitals.nhs.uk/consultants/) in our hospitals.
Continued professional development of trainers
We support continuous learning for all staff and provide a CPD framework and programme of internal and external training opportunities for trainers to maintain and evolve innovative teaching methods incorporating education into all that we do.
