MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and is a type of scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce highly detailed images of the inside of the body.
The results of an MRI scan can be used to help diagnose conditions, plan treatments and assess how effective previous treatment has been.

MRI Head
You will recline on the scanner table with your head in a special coil which helps us to obtain very high quality images.
There is a mirror inside which lets you see out of the scanner, although many patients simply shut their eyes during the scan.

MRI Knee
You will lie on the scanner table with your knee in a special coil. The table will then move feet first into the scanner. Your head will remain outside the scanner, and when you are ready your scan will begin.

MRI Spine
The exact technique depends upon the area of your spine being examined.
If the ‘Cervical Spine’ is being examined, then you will need to lie on your back with a special aerial positioned around your neck, which is a little like having a hard collar on. Once in position, you will go into the scanner, head first and when ready your scan will begin.
For any other areas of the spine you simply lie on a flat coil.
