Our fetal medicine unit is an outpatient clinic staffed by highly qualified specialist doctors and midwives. They form a multidisciplinary specialist care team.
We offer individualised care for pregnant women and their families from all over the North East of England and Cumbria where there is a concern for the health of the unborn baby.
You may be referred to the fetal medicine unit by your local hospital if:
- Something unexpected was seen on one of your routine ultrasound scans
- There is a greater than usual chance of your baby having a condition. This could be because you have had a high chance screening result, or following the previous birth of a baby with certain conditions, and specialist testing may be required
- Your baby is thought to be much smaller than usual
- If your baby needs specialist treatment during the pregnancy, such as a blood transfusion in the womb
- Your baby is likely to need specialist treatment very soon after birth
- Your baby needs enhanced monitoring before or after birth.
Emotional support
