Our children’s cardiothoracic outpatient department provides a comprehensive service for:
- New referrals.
- Conditions requiring follow up appointments.
- Pre and post-operative monitoring.
- Pre and post cardiothoracic transplant.
Coming for an appointment?
Please check in at main outpatients reception
Appointments involve multiple investigations; the time you see the doctor will be SIGNIFICANTLY later than the appointment time. Waiting room capacity only allows two people to accompany each patient, including children.
During their appointment, patients will have several investigations prior to consultation with a clinician, which may include:
- Height, weight and observations
- Electrocardiogram (ECG) commonly
- Echocardiogram commonly
- Blood sampling if required
Families are given results of investigations and any diagnosis during their consultation.
A number of patients are discharged following consultation as there are no concerns with their heart.
Multiple clinics run at the same time, therefore other patients with later appointment times may have their consultation before you. Medical teams may be required to urgently attend patients elsewhere in the hospital which can cause delays to elective outpatient appointments.

Supporting patients and their families.
We understand that the lead up to and attending medical appointments can be an anxious time for families.
To best support your child during the appointment, please follow these steps:
- Talk to your child about what is going to happen at the appointment.
- Be positive …… encourage your child as they have each investigation.
- If you think your child may struggle with any investigations, please let clinic staff know discreetly, out of earshot of your child, to maintain a ‘can do’ approach.
- Clinic staff will support you and your child during the visit – please make staff aware of your needs.
- If your child would benefit from reasonable adjustments to treatment, review or a quieter waiting area, please phone the clinic directly on the contact details below prior to the appointment.
