Who we work with

We work with many different partners and organisations to deliver cutting-edge research to patients.

As well as our clinical and academic-led research, we have strong working relationships with pharmaceutical, medical device, biotech, diagnostic partners, and contract research organisations, working together to improve processes and set-up timelines.

The trust has a dedicated industry team supporting clinical research, working seamlessly with sponsors and speciality delivery teams.

On this page, you’ll find more information about some of our closest collaborations.

Newcastle University

Our partnership with Newcastle University is critical to the delivery of high calibre research. A large proportion of our research funding is awarded through collaboration with the university.

This strong partnership helps to move research ‘from bench to bedside’ – taking results from the laboratory or trial into hospitals to directly benefit patient care.

Newcastle Joint Research Office (NJRO)

The long-established NJRO, a partnership between Newcastle Hospitals and Newcastle University, facilitates the process of bench to bedside research, supporting researchers along the research pathway, from shaping an idea and processing funding applications, through to set-up and study close-down.

We also have a quality assurance team who provides oversight of research activities across the trust and university, helping us to ensure data is correct, credible, and consistent.

NIHR Regional Research Delivery Network North East and north Cumbria (NIHR RRDN NENC)

The Research Delivery Network (RDN) is funded by the DHSC to enable the health and care system to attract, optimise and deliver research across England. Newcastle Hospitals hosts the North East and north Cumbria RDN, who supports:

  • the delivery of research which has been funded by the NIHR, research charities, other public funders and the life sciences industry
  • increasing capacity and capability to deliver research for the future
  • covering three different types of research: clinical, public health and social care
  • across four different settings: hospital, primary care, community and residential (or any of these in combination)

Newcastle Health Research Partnership (NHRP)

Newcastle Hospitals is one of five partners who forms Newcastle Health Research Partnership, which aims to address health inequalities, improve population health, and generate economic growth.

As a designated academic health science centre, NHRP cultivates cross-partner collaboration in health and care research, innovation, education and training.  This includes brokering new research and education activities as well as facilitating streamlined joint-working arrangements.

NIHR HealthTech Research Centre

The NIHR HealthTech Research Centre is a collaboration between Newcastle Hospitals and Newcastle University, working with businesses to support the development of diagnostic tests.

The partnership aims to give patients and healthcare teams access to faster and more accurate diagnostics and enable more tailored treatment for patients with infectious disease, long-term conditions, rare disease and age-related conditions.

NIHR Newcastle Patient Safety Research Collaboration (PSRC)

The NIHR Newcastle PSRC carries out research with the goal of improving healthcare safety where there are inequalities for those from disadvantaged communities.

Experts from the PSRC collaboration deliver research that results in real-world change for patient safety and health outcomes for those with multiple long-term conditions.

The PSCRC is hosted by Newcastle Hospitals in partnership with Newcastle University, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust; Queen Mary University of London, University of Northumbria at Newcastle and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Diagnostics North East (DxNE)

DxNE is an umbrella organisation, dedicated to developing the North East of England as a leader in diagnostic development and health innovation.

Originally established in 2017, DxNE was created in recognition of the unique and unrivalled infrastructure and expertise in place across the region to support the full diagnostic development pathway of in vitro diagnostics, from discovery, development, and evaluation through to adoption and commercialisation.
