Hello, my name is Eleanor Nailon and I am a Digital Clinical Education Specialist within the Trust’s Digital Health Team.
My role focuses on developing and delivering digital systems training for staff across the Trust, helping colleagues use digital tools effectively and confidently in their day-to-day work.
I am passionate about supporting staff to develop their digital skills and confidence. By helping colleagues make the most of digital systems, I hope to improve efficiency, reduce administrative burden and ultimately contribute to safer patient care.
As part of the Digital Education Team, I deliver training through a range of approaches including one-to-one support, ward-based teaching and classroom sessions. I work closely with staff to help them overcome challenges, develop confidence and use systems more effectively. When colleagues understand how to use digital tools efficiently, it can improve workflows, support wellbeing and strengthen communication across services.
My approach to digital health is collaborative and inclusive. I enjoy working alongside staff to understand their needs and help them apply what they have learned in a way that makes a real difference to their role. Seeing colleagues gain confidence and immediately identify ways to improve their workflows is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job.
My journey into digital health
I have been a nurse within Newcastle Hospitals for almost 10 years. I began my career on a surgical ward before moving into Oncology and Haematology, where I spent seven years working across both day unit and inpatient settings.
During this time, I delivered chemotherapy and supportive therapies, cared for patients with complex needs and supported them throughout their cancer journey. I progressed from Staff Nurse to Ward Sister, leading teams within the Chemotherapy Day Unit and NCCC Ward 34. Alongside my clinical responsibilities, I supported the development of others by mentoring student nurses, supporting newly qualified staff and assessing staff competence for inclusion on the Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy register, enabling them to safely deliver chemotherapy.
While working on the Day Unit, I also delivered chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments through a nurse-led outreach clinic, helping improve access to treatment closer to patients’ homes while maintaining high standards of patient-centred care.
My first introduction to Digital Health came while working on the wards, where I worked closely with Digital Health colleagues during eRecord downtimes and ward-based documentation training. Seeing the support they provided, and the impact digital systems could have when used effectively, sparked my interest in the role of digital technology within healthcare.
When the opportunity arose to join the Digital Education Team, I saw it as an exciting chance to combine my clinical experience with my passion for education and staff development. My background in frontline healthcare has given me a strong understanding of the challenges faced by clinical teams, which continues to shape my approach to digital education today.
As we continue to develop digital healthcare, I believe it is important to keep staff informed, involved and engaged. Colleagues who use systems every day have valuable insight into what works well and what could be improved. Listening to feedback, involving staff in digital development and continuing to provide training in a variety of formats will be key to delivering successful digital change for both staff and patients.
