Ward/Area Covered

  • The Neonatal Physiotherapy team work on the regional Neonatal Unit at the RVI which has intensive care, high dependency and low dependency areas. We work collaboratively as part of the multi-disciplinary team. We monitor babies’ development and support families to be as involved as they can with caring for and supporting their baby on the Neonatal Unit. We know involving parents in this way can positively impact a babies’ longer term development.
  • We support families from the beginning of their journey in intensive care, and provide outpatient follow-up for those babies who we know are more at risk of having problems with their development, until 2 years of age.
  • We also provide cover to the post-natal wards on an ad-hoc referral basis for babies.

Conditions Covered

  • Pre-term babies from 23 weeks
  • Term babies with surgical problems for example CDH and Gastroschisis
  • Orthopaedic issues like Positional Talipes and Shoulder Dystocia
  • HIE/Neonatal Stroke
  • Babies who may have been unwell at birth and need support with their breathing
