The out of hours dental emergency and advisory service is for patients in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland.
What do we do?
The out-of-hours dental emergency and advisory service provides advice and / or dental treatment to patients whose clinical need necessitates general dental services outside of normal opening hours.
If you have a dental problem outside of normal working hours you will be triaged and if necessary transferred to the dentist on call. Depending on the nature of the call, advice may be given on how to manage the condition or, if deemed necessary by the dentist, urgent care or emergency dental care may be provided.
Emergency dental care will be given within three hours of the dentist receiving the call for the following conditions:
- Dental trauma
- Dental haemorrhage
- Increasing dental swelling/airway threatening swelling
Urgent treatment will be provided if the dentist on call believes your oral health is likely to deteriorate significantly, or you are in pain. Only treatment which is necessary to prevent significant deterioration or address severe pain will be provided.
These conditions include:
- Broken fillings
- Loose crowns
- Toothache
- Sore mouth/oral ulceration
- Denture repairs/eases
- Pericoronitis
- Dental infection
- Acute periodontal conditions (e.g. Acute ulcerative gingivitis)
Urgent care is provided within 24hours. If the patient’s health is unlikely to deteriorate then advice rather than treatment will be given.
How can I access the service?
You can access the service by contacting NHS 111. If you live outside of the catchment area for this service you can access care locally using NHS 111.
This service is available from 6pm to 10pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 9pm on Saturday, Sundays and bank holidays.
Where is the service?
You can access the service from two sites one in Newcastle and one in Northumberland. This service is not available by direct access.
