Getting ready for surgery

Admission for surgery

• You and your child will be greeted by a member of the nursing team.
• Your child will be seen by a Doctor and by an anaesthetist.
• Your child will be fasted before their general anaesthetic (this will be explained on admission)
• Patients with long hair are encouraged to tie it up in plaits.
• A hospital gown will be provided for your child to wear for theatre.
• Local anaesthetic cream may be applied to your child’s hand to numb the skin.
• One parent can accompany their child to the theatre reception and can go into the anaesthetic room until your child is asleep.
• Once your child is asleep, a nurse will escort you back to the ward.
• Once woken from the anaesthetic, your child will be in the recovery room.
• When ready, they will ring the ward for you to go and sit with them.
