Welcome to Gastroenterology at the Newcastle Hospitals.
Our Gastroenterology service cares for patients with diseases or disorders of the gut (digestive or gastrointestinal tract). This involves conditions which might affect the oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, bile ducts, gallbladder, small and large bowel (colon).
We provide these services at both the RVI and Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, working closely with colleagues in other specialist areas, including:
- Hepatology (who care for patients with diseases or disorders of the liver)
- Colorectal surgery
- Upper gastrointestinal surgery
Our service is multidisciplinary, meaning you will meet different healthcare professionals including doctors (physicians, surgeons and radiologists), nurses, healthcare assistants, dietitians, pharmacists, reception staff, administrative staff and other members of the team.
Some conditions we treat and services we offer
- Coeliac disease
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Iron deficiency anaemia
- Adult nutrition services
- Pancreaticobiliary medicine
Newcastle has a long history of pioneering medical research and we are proud to be able to offer many of our patients access to research studies. This approach allows our gastroenterologists to constantly seek to improve diagnosis and treatments for people with digestive disorders.
We have a close relationship with Newcastle University and train medical students and junior doctors who you may meet when you come to see us.
