Who we support
Our Home Enteral Feeding Dietetic Service supports adults and children who are tube fed at home. The team includes dietitians and dietetic support workers. We work closely with doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to provide joined-up care.
What we do
We work with individuals, families, and carers to make sure tube feeding meets each person’s nutrition and fluid needs, as well as your preferences, circumstances, and medical background.
We provide ongoing reviews to ensure feeding plans remain appropriate and effective. We also offer advice, guidance, and problem-solving support to help people feel confident managing tube feeding and maintaining their health and wellbeing at home.
When and where you can be seen
The service runs Monday-Friday from 8.30-4.30pm
Appointments are usually offered:
- In your own home
- In a clinic setting
- In some schools and daycentres
- In nursing and care home facilities
- By phone or video call, if suitable
The type of appointment will depend on individual needs.
We are a teaching hospital and sometimes have student dietitians on placement with us who may be present during appointments. Student work is always reviewed and supervised by qualified team members, but if there are any concerns about having students visit with the team, please contact the department.
Who can use the service
People are identified and referred into the service from hospital teams once it has been agreed that they will leave hospital with a feeding tube in place.
In Newcastle, this service is for people who:
- Have a feeding tube AND are registered with a Newcastle GP
