If you become unwell, please call our 24-7 emergency helpline on 0191 213 9302
If you are coming to the acute oncology emergency assessment area, it it because you may have symptoms or problems related to:
- Your cancer
- Your cancer treatment (such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, radiotherapy or transplant)
You will be cared for by several different members of staff, including staff nurses, acute oncology specialist nurses, health care assistants and doctors.
We aim to assess and review you as quickly as possible. Depending on the reason for your review, you may be asked to sit in the waiting room while we are waiting for your blood tests to return or scans to be arranged. Please feel free to bring a family member or carer if you would like support.
The time spent in the assessment area varies depending on how busy the unit is and what tests you may need. We aim to keep you informed at every stage.
If you need to be admitted following your review, you will be moved to a ward when a bed is available. The nurses and doctors will explain the reasons for admission and what happens next.
If you are well enough to go home after your assessment, you may be given a prescription plus advice on what to do if you become unwell.
You can find a detailed access guide for ward 36 on the AccessAble website.
