As part of ward 36 (chemotherapy day unit) we also have an emergency assessment area for patients who have symptoms or problems relating to their cancer, treatment or a new health concern.
Several different members of staff will care for you, including staff nurses, acute oncology specialist nurses, health care assistants and doctors.
We aim to review you as quickly as possible. We may ask you to sit in the waiting room when you are waiting for bloods to return or scans to be arranged. Please feel free to bring a family member or carer if you would like support.
The time spent in the assessment area varies depending on how busy the unit is and what tests you may need. We aim to keep you informed at every stage.
If you need to be admitted following your review, you will be moved to a ward when a bed is available. The nurses and doctors will explain the reasons for admission and what happens next.
If you are well enough to go home after your assessment, you may be given a prescription, advice on what to do if you become unwell.
If you become unwell, please call our 24-7 emergency helpline on 0191 213 9302.
