This part-time, charitably funded, NMAHP Researcher Development Institute Master’s in Clinical Research Fellowship is designed to enable professionals to remain clinical alongside their research development.
The successful applicant would commence their fellowship in September/October of that year.
What is a Master’s in Clinical Research Fellowship and what does the funding provide?
There are two distinct streams that would be on offer, which allow applicants to choose the level of support most appropriate for their individual requirements.
- Full Masters in Research programme: The fellowship will enable an individual Nurse, Midwife or AHP to undertake a full Master’s in Clinical Research programme with an identified University. The fellowship is part-time and designed to allow the individual to remain present and visible within the clinical department, whilst undertaking the research programme alongside.
The award will fund backfill up to 0.5 WTE (2.5 days a week) of salary and associated tuition fees for the duration of the programme (maximum 3 years). Tuition fees are covered by a ringfenced pot from our NMAHP CPD fund.
- Masters in Research bespoke training programme: This flexible fellowship will enable an individual Nurse, Midwife or AHP to undertake a small amount of research related academic training at Masters level, with protected, funded time to develop their research expertise and career. The fellowship is part-time and designed to allow the individual to remain present and visible within the clinical department, whilst undertaking the research-training programme alongside.
The award will fund backfill up to 0.5WTE (2.5 days a week) for up to 18 months.
- up to £4500 for formal courses, modules or other relevant research related training and development activities. This funding comes from a ringfenced pot of NMAHP CPD funding, so any training and development activities should meet that criteria.
Is there anything else we need to know?
We advise that all applicants seek guidance with costings from the Newcastle Joint Research Office; this can be done by completing a Project Initiation Form (PIF).
Within the bespoke programme we request that you identify and agree an appropriate NMAHP mentor to support your training and development and progression of your research idea. This maybe someone from your specific area of work or more linked towards your specific question. They will need to have experience of carrying out research in clinical practice, they may have or be working towards a PhD. If you have any questions or are struggling to identify a mentor, please get in touch with the NMAHP research team via a 30 min one to one slot. We also suggest that you identify a network for support. This might be the NMAHP RDI forum or a specific forum related to your question for example the Health inequalities group. Within the application you will be asked to briefly discuss the reasoning behind your selection.
£1000 pot of funding – Following feedback from our RDI fellows, from September 2024, we now offer a small £1k pot of funding, in addition to the salary backfill. This pot will fund activities in support of your project or your research related development during the fellowship. This might include, but is not limited to, patient and public engagement expenses and conferences
