The regional urology centre at Freeman Hospital offers all forms of urology care under one roof.
Our specialised urologists use high-tech equipment and the latest techniques, including lasers and surgical robotic systems, to offer the best, minimally invasive procedures possible. These offer high levels of precision and swift recovery, while minimising damage to surrounding muscle structures and tissues.

Specialists in robotic and laparoscopic treatments
We use the latest robotic and laparoscopic equipment to treat many urological conditions and are continually developing new techniques, which allow minimal damage to healthy tissue, i.e. minimally invasive procedures.
Laparoscopic (also known as keyhole) surgery is a highly specialist, minimally invasive technique which involves tiny incisions rather than larger cuts associated with traditional, open surgery, and the use of narrow instruments to carry out the treatment required.
This approach means patients have a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery, and there are fewer complications.
We currently offer minimally invasive surgery for:
- Robotic assisted radical prostatectomy (removal of the prostate gland)
- Robotic assisted partial nephrectomy (partial removal of the kidney)
- Robotic assisted cystectomy (removal of the bladder)
- Robotic assisted pyeloplasty (removal of blockage in ureter)
- Laparoscopic simple / radical nephrectomy (removal of the kidney)
- Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (for kidney transplants)
- Laparoscopic nephroureterectomy (removal of the kidney and ureter)

Our expertise
We’re a leading provider in the north of England for treatment of the prostate without the need for traditional surgery, reducing the risk of erectile difficulties, bleeding and continence problems.
Our clinicians are experts in the treatment of bladder, kidney, prostate and testicular cancer.
We are the regional centre for the treatment of complex urethral disease offering a number of different procedures for the reconstruction of the urethra (water pipe).
A number of our team specialise in urological reconstruction surgery and after care. This surgery improves the function of the urinary tract to allow patients to be continent with protection of their kidney function.
We are the only hospital in the north of England offering neuromodulation for a range of disorders, such as bladder over activity and urge incontinence. In these procedures a small device is implanted under the skin to modulate he signals from the bladder to the brain, allowing many patients to regain confidence in controlling symptoms without the need for other medication.
We deal with erectile dysfunction and penile curvature conditions and provide a full range of treatment options, including inflatable penile implants.
Patients with small kidney stones come to our unit from across the region, for treatment using a specialist technique that utilises high energy shock waves to break the stones into tiny pieces, which can be passed easily on urination. Alternative treatments are available for larger kidney stones, or stones in your ureter, including minimally invasive surgical techniques using a laser.
