Microbiology

At each clinic you will be asked to provide a sputum sample or a cough swab for microbiology to test. A sputum sample is preferred where possible.

This allows us to analyse the sputum for any microorganisms (which cause infections). The sample is sent to our microbiology laboratory at the Freeman Hospital where a team of healthcare scientists who specialise in cystic fibrosis analyse the sample.

Significant results are relayed to the cystic fibrosis team via our microbiology doctors so that prompt and appropriate treatment can be started.

Dr Ali Robb is our consultant microbiologist. She has offered to set aside some time and attend clinic if any of you would like the chance to discuss your microbiology better (your bugs)!

Please let Susan, Rachel or Louise know if you are interested and when is convenient to arrange a consultation. It can be done on the phone or in clinic.
