Ward/Area Covered

  • The foetal exposure to medicines service is running as a pilot until March 2026, funded by NHS England and provided by teams at Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.
  • A multidisciplinary clinic is also held at CRESTA (Campus for Aging and Vitality, Newcastle General Hospital site).

Conditions Covered

  • Anti-seizure medicines, also known as anti-convulsants or antiepileptic drugs, are used by people who have epilepsy and other disorders to manage symptoms. Some medicines, when taken by pregnant women, can cause problems in babies’ development. This can show at birth, or later, and lead to difficulties through life.
  • The fetal exposure to medicines service (FEMS) provides expert assessment, advice and care plans for people who are thought to have been affected by exposure to certain anti-convulsant medicines in the womb.
