We specialise in implanted brain-computer interfaces and neurostimulation, covering all neurological conditions.
Our work, ethos and ethics are founded on an aspiration for people living with disabling neurological conditions in the UK to have safe access to clinical trial opportunities, involving the latest emerging neurotechnologies.
Leadership team
Mr Mohammed Akbar Hussain, clinical director
Mr Hussain is a consultant functional neurosurgeon at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. He specialises in surgical management of nerve-related pain, epilepsy and surgery in eloquent areas of the brain, using intraoperative monitoring and advanced neuroimaging techniques.
Mr Hussain is highly experienced in the management of movement disorders requiring deep brain stimulation and in conducting awake surgery, to provide treatment whilst maintaining the patient’s function.
Dr Luke Bashford, scientific director
Dr Luke Bashford is a lecturer in neuroscience and neurotechnology at Newcastle University and scientific director of the National Centre for Neurotechnology and Neurorestoration at Newcastle Hospitals.
Dr Bashford’s research group uses implanted brain-computer interfaces to investigate how the brain produces movement, sensation and cognitive function. This knowledge is used to restore those functions in neurological conditions where they are lost or affected, for example, in paralysis, mood disorders or dementias.
