All parents are offered a one off injection of vitamin K for their baby following birth.
Vitamin K helps prevent a rare bleeding disorder called haemorrhagic disease of the newborn. The injection helps your baby’s blood to clot properly, and keeps them safe from serious bleeding.
Your midwife will have discussed the injection with you while you were pregnant.
If you’d prefer your baby not to have an injection, they can have vitamin K drops given orally in their mouth instead, but they will need further doses each day for several weeks.
