Seborrhoeic keratoses are harmless growths on the skin caused by an excess build-up of the ordinary skin cells. They are frequently found on the trunk, and usually start to appear after the age of 30. They can run in families but are not infectious.
They are not a type of skin cancer and do not develop into skin cancer. They are extremely common; almost everyone older than 50 has 1 or 2, some people have many such warts.
Seborrhoeic keratoses are harmless but they can itch and may look unsightly. Applying a moisturiser can help to soothe any itch.
Once present they usually persist and new ones often appear over the years.
