Newcastle Hospitals has been awarded the NHS silver quality standard for its work experience offering. This accreditation is awarded to trusts who demonstrate excellence in their work experience programmes.
With the support of over 75 staff members, we have successfully placed 225 learners to undertake work experience placements since May 2024.
Placement areas included medicine, nursing, finance and office-based roles, ensuring a comprehensive range of opportunities.
The work experience programme runs in a cohort style, working with departments across the trust to find supervisors who are willing to take on learners for a period of time. Opportunities are then advertised across the trust website for prospective learners to apply.
The team has worked hard to balance the demand for placement experiences with the challenges of the team’s capacity and are pleased to see this effort recognised with a silver accreditation.
Feedback from the work experience quality standard cited the trust’s solid commitment to work experience opportunities across departments and strong mentorship throughout placements as some of the supporting factors for this achievement.
The NHS England Quality Award provides applicants and organisations with the assurance that the trust’s work experience offering reaches the highest possible standards. The award also supports the trust in its continued development, outlining what steps need to be taken to take the trusts work experience offering to the next level.
Sarah Wales, widening participation project coordinator at Newcastle Hospitals, commented: “We’re thrilled to have achieved silver award status – a proud step up from bronze! This accreditation celebrates our dedication to offering meaningful work experience placements that inspire and shape the future NHS workforce. This award also acknowledges the commitment of our placement supervisors, who generously share their time and skills. We’re extremely proud to be recognised by NHS England and look forward to working towards gold status.”
