68 year-old, Glenda Ellison was the first patient to undergo the procedure at the Freeman Hospital’s purpose-built surgical hub.
After suffering debilitating knee pain for several years due to osteoarthritis, Glenda was happy to be the first patient to undergo a same-day joint replacement.
“My knee was becoming incredibly painful and after trying all of the options available to me other than surgery, I was referred to Mr Dobson’s team for a total knee replacement,” she said.
Total knee replacement surgery is classed as major surgery but advancements over the years have meant across the country this procedure can safely be done as a day-case.
Consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Philip Dobson, commented: “We have been successfully carrying out partial knee replacements here since last May and this year we decided we were ready to provide this to patients waiting for total knee replacement.
“Improvements in our enhanced recovery joint replacement programme have meant we are able to offer patients like Glenda joint replacements in our Day Treatment Centre.”
After having her operation and being able to return home the same-day, Glenda worked intensely with her rehabilitation and 8 weeks down the line she is making excellent progress.
She added: “I was a little nervous about the procedure, but the team were excellent. Before I knew it, I was in the discharge area after having the operation.
“I think being at home has helped speed up my recovery. I had the comfort of my own bed and was well looked after – I was ringing the bell for my husband to come up the stairs!”
The team have expanded their offer to other patients on the waiting list for total knee replacements and Mr Dobson plans on carrying out more joint replacements at the centre.
“I’m delighted that Glenda has had a positive experience with our new pathway and look forward to offering this to more of our patients as we continue to evolve our services.”
The Day Treatment Centre is a purpose built elective surgical hub that allows same day discharge for a wide variety of procedures. Patients have to meet certain requirements to undergo their surgery.
