A community diabetes specialist nurse has been awarded the title of Queen’s Nurse by the Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI), recognising her outstanding contribution to community nursing.
Donna Sutton, lead community diabetes specialist nurse at Newcastle Hospitals, has demonstrated exceptional commitment to patient-centred care. Through her care and compassion, she has empowered individuals to manage complex conditions through education and holistic support.
The Queen’s Nurse title is awarded to nurses who uphold the highest standards of care, learning, and leadership in community practice and Donna embodies these through her integrity and passion for her work.
Her proactive approach includes mentoring colleagues and driving professional development initiatives that enhance confidence and skills among community nurses.
She is also deeply committed to reducing health inequalities through innovative, community-based programmes and active participation in national forums.
Reflecting on the honour, Donna said: “I am truly thrilled to receive the title of Queen’s Nurse. The values of integrity, trust, holistic care, leadership, and lifelong learning are central to my practice. I remain committed to advocating for patients, mentoring colleagues, and driving continuous improvement in community healthcare.
“I want to use my skills, expertise and passion to influence positive change in healthcare to benefit individuals, families and communities.”
