Newcastle Hospitals is hosting its fifth annual sustainable supplier event as it continues to work towards a net zero supply chain.
The free event takes place on Wednesday 14 May in Newcastle and gives suppliers- both current and potential- the opportunity to learn more about sustainable procurement and hear from experts.
A greener NHS
Emissions from the trust’s supply chain are estimated to account for more than 70% of its total carbon footprint.
By 2030, the NHS in England will no longer procure from any supplier that does not have its own net zero target.
As part of initiatives to reduce this footprint, the trust is embedding sustainability into all purchasing decisions to meet its net zero supply chain goal by 2040.
Co-hosted by Newcastle Hospitals and Newcastle City Council and sponsored by Net Zero North East, delegates can attend in person or online.
Tackling the climate crisis
The full-day event includes presentations from Sir Paul Ennals CBE, joint chair of Newcastle Hospitals and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, the North East Combined Authority, Health Innovation North East and North Cumbria, and NHS England’s Greener NHS team.
Dan Shelley, procurement and supply chain director at Newcastle Hospitals, said:
“This event is a great opportunity to find out more about sustainable procurement, share challenges and solutions, and learn best practice from other organisations.
“There will also be an opportunity to access 1:1 support from a carbon expert, have a 1:1 meet the buyer conversation or join round table discussions, and speak with presenters.
“We hope that by bringing organisations together we can amplify efforts across the region to tackle the climate crisis”
Embedding sustainability
The trust was the first in the world to declare a climate emergency and has already implemented a number of measures to embed sustainability across sites.
These include the installation of solar panels, generating energy from heat pumps, introducing meat-free menus to catering facilities, and increasing biodiversity.
The trust has also introduced a mandatory requirement for all suppliers to submit carbon emission data to ensure robust reporting measures.
A five-step framework has also been developed to support suppliers to reach their net zero goals. To date over 850 companies are working within this framework to reduce carbon footprint.
