The BMA resident doctors (previously known as junior doctors) in England will be taking part in strike action in July.
Continuous strike action – day and night – will begin from 7am on Friday 25 July until 6.59am on Wednesday 30 July and many of our resident doctors working in Newcastle Hospitals will be taking part.
The strike action means the BMA is asking resident doctors to:
- Not begin any shift that is due to start after 06.59am on Friday 25 July
- Or before 06.59am on Wednesday 30 July.
Patient safety is our number one priority so we will be adjusting our services and the way we staff them to make sure quality of care is not compromised.
On the days of strikes, we will prioritise emergency treatment and patients seeking urgent treatment will be seen. Unfortunately this means we may have to reschedule some routine appointments and procedures and we will be contacting patients directly to let them know.
We appreciate that this will be frustrating, however, it is essential that we reschedule to allow emergency care to continue to be available. All appointments will be re-arranged as a priority.
Some key messages for patients and the public:
- If you are seriously ill or injured, or your life is at risk, you should continue to come forward and seek emergency care in the usual way. Call 999 or attend the Emergency Department.
- If you need urgent medical help or advice (that won’t wait for a GP appointment), or if you are unsure about whether you should go to hospital, go to NHS 111 online (www.111.nhs.uk) first. If you do not have internet access then dial 111 for free from any phone. Please do not turn up to hospital without using 111 first. You can also visit your nearest pharmacy and can check opening times here.
- If you need urgent medical attention, but it’s not a life-threatening situation, our urgent treatment centres are open every day of the year for minor illness and injury. You can find out more on our website.
- If you need urgent mental health support, you can get 24/7 access to your local crisis team via Mental Health Helpline for Urgent Help – NHS (www.nhs.uk).
- If you have a planned appointment on the days of strike, please attend as planned, unless we have contacted you. We will contact you if your appointment needs to be rescheduled due to strike action.
