Temporary relocation of the paediatric intensive care unit
From 22 June 2026, our paediatric intensive care unit on ward 12 will temporarily relocate to ward 49 at the RVI to allow essential estates works to be completed.
Ward 12 is the Children’s Critical Care Unit. We are an 18 bedded critical care facility, caring for all critically-ill children from the North East and North Cumbria with vast number of conditions relating to:
- Respiratory and ENT
- General surgery
- Neurology
- Neurosurgery
- Burns and plastic surgery
- Trauma
- Nephrology
- Endocrinology
- Oncology
- Immunology and bone marrow transplant
- Ophthalmology
- Orthopaedics
We work closely with the Children’s Heart Unit based at the Freeman Hospital.
The Great North Children’s Hospital and Freeman Hospital host one of the largest and most comprehensive children’s critical care services in the UK and serve the largest geographical area in England.

Location of ward
PICU is currently on level four of the Great North Children’s Hospital in New Victoria Wing at the RVI.
