Professor Francisco Figueiredo is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Newcastle Eye Centre, Royal Victoria Infirmary specialising in corneal surgery and related diseases, cataract surgery, corneal transplantation, blepharitis, dry eye pterygium and red eye.
He is also an Honorary Professor in Ophthalmology at Newcastle University.
Research
Professor Figueiredo’s main research interests are in corneal diseases, stem cells, corneal transplantation, keratoconus, dry eye and ocular allergy.
Limbal stem cells
His main area of research with Newcastle University is limbal stem cells with the aim of identifying new treatment strategies for limbal stem cell deficiency. These include the transplantation of expanded limbal stem cells and the use of growth promoters to expand any surviving limbal stem cells.
