Mr Parag Sonawane graduated from the MUHS University, India in 2010. He undertook Core Surgical training followed by urology specialist surgical training at the Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital, a specialist hospital dedicated entirely to urology and nephrology, including the diagnosis and treatment of kidney stones and urinary tract stones.
In the UK, he completed the FRCS (Urol) in 2022 and a two-year Urology Diploma through the programme provided by the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.
He was appointed a Consultant Urological Surgeon (Locum) at the Freeman Hospital in 2024.
Special interests
Mr Sonawane specialises in robotic surgery for cancers of the prostate and urinary bladder. In particular, he specialises in nerve sparing techniques for robotic prostatectomy.
He lead the introduction of the novel-retzius sparing robotic prostatectomy surgery at the Freeman Hospital. In addition, he has interests in the surgical management of general urological conditions and diagnostic urology. He also holds an honorary consultant post with Northumbria NHS Trust.
Teaching and research
Mr Sonawane secured a Robotic Uro-Oncology Fellowship at University College London Hospital in 2023, which is the UK’s largest pelvic oncology centre for prostate and bladder cancer. He has published several research papers in peer reviewed international journals, co-authoring a book chapter on practical urology and winning an award for his publication in an International Urology Journal. He is a reviewer for Peer reviewed Journals. He has presented in several regional, national and international conferences and has won several awards including the coveted Vattikuti Foundation Robotic Scholarship in 2019.
He is actively involved in medical education and the training of medical students, Foundation Programme doctors and surgical trainees. He is also a trainer for the Robotic Fellowship program at the Freeman Hospital.
