Dr Anne Burdess is a consultant vascular surgeon specialising in complex aortic aneurysm repair both open and endovascular.
She qualified with excellence in Surgery from the University of Edinburgh in 2000 with both an MB ChB and an intercalated honours degree in Physiology. Dr Burdess conducted her surgical training on the South East of Scotland Basic and Higher surgical rotations.
During her training, Dr Burdess was instrumental in creating a new alliance between the departments of surgery and cardiovascular science. This led not only to the award of her own PhD but provided a dedicated research pathway for future vascular surgeons, subsequently generating millions in grant funding.
Teaching
She has presented nationally and internationally and has an increasing role in teaching workshops and exam pathways within the European Vascular Society. She developed her endovascular training with out of programme experience at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle and an Endovascular BSET fellowship in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. In 2018 she secured the post-CCT Complex Aortic International Fellowship at Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden.
Since commencing her current position, Dr Burdess has formed part of the Complex Aortic team, working to improve the full patient journey from assessment to post-operative care. She has continued to build the collaborative TAAA programme together with the Cardiothoracic Directorate and consolidate Newcastle’s position as a specialist aortic centre and centre of clinical excellence.
She is a mother to Dylan and Phoebe, and when not at work, can be found in the North Sea either on or off a board or somewhere up a mountain!
Research
Dr Burdess’s research interests include cardiovascular risk management, aortic strategies and outcomes.
