Following safer sleep guidelines reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS, previously known as cot death). The advice should be followed until your baby is 12 months old, or 12 months after their due date for premature or low birthweight babies.
The safest place for a baby to sleep is in their own clear, flat, firm separate sleep space (e.g. a cot or Moses basket) in the same room as you. The same advice applies for every sleep, day or night.
- Lie your baby on their back
- Keep the cot clear of anything that could cover your baby’s face and head – e.g. toys, cot bumpers, and loose bedding
- Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress
- Keep baby smoke-free
- Avoid your baby getting too hot
- Have your baby sleep in the same room as you for at least the first six months
