Our ambitious plans to build a new specialist hospital building are taking shape. To ensure the future of our services, it is important that we continue to invest and we’d like to know your views on our plans.
The iconic building will be home for many of our specialist services including adult critical care, burn care, North East Assisted Ventilation Service, out-patient elements of maternity services and for patients with cystic fibrosis.
The proposed building will also provide more ward and theatre space which means that we will be able to treat patients who have seen their planned care delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
We are currently seeking investment from the Department of Health and Social Care’s New Hospitals Programme to finance the project.
About the new specialist hospital building
The proposed building will be built next to the Leazes wing on the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) site. The building will include four clinical floors supported by basement and rooftop facilities.
As well as providing a safe and high-quality environment to provide high specialist care, key features of the new building include:
- A main entrance providing reception area, patient information, coffee shop and seating area as well as a separate entrance for fetal medicine and the Women’s Health Unit. A bridge link is also planned between the new specialist hospital building and the Leazes Wing to enable easy movement across other floors.
- A central ‘street’ providing clear signage and spacious walkways so that everyone can find their way easily. The building will also be set around three internal courtyards where there will be areas to enjoy the natural surroundings, light and space.
- An outdoor, rooftop space where patients can enjoy some fresh air and relaxation to support their well being.
Why is the building needed?
At the moment our specialist services are provided from a range of older buildings that are not good enough to help us care for patients well and also cost a lot to maintain. Some of the facilities need to be replaced, refurbished or upgraded urgently, because they don’t meet the standards we expect
Our commitment to sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of this project and we need to make sure that the building meets the ambitions of our Climate Emergency Strategy 2020-25 and our commitment to become a net zero carbon organisation by 2040.
We have also set ourselves a target to achieve net zero carbon ‘in use’ and an outstanding rating from BREEAM, a world renowned sustainability assessment.
