This may include students who have autism, learning difficulties or hearing impairment as well as a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties.
Aims:
- To improve the speech, language and communication skills of young people in colleges and 6th forms across the North East
- Improve life skills and functional communication skills
- Support young people in work placements and towards employment
The work we do includes:
- Individualised speech, language and communication programmes to be used by teaching and support staff and monitored at appropriate times
- Periods of individual therapy consolidated by teaching/support staff and parents.
- Advice to teaching, support staff, work placement staff on useful strategies.
- Appropriate advice/targets for a student’s Education and Health Care Plan
- Training for teaching and support staff
- Relevant information to help a student transition from further education and hopefully to employment
Young people may access this service if they:
- Are between 16 and 25 years of age
- Have an EHCP with a specific speech and language therapy recommendation under the health section (or have a Connexions top-up)
- Are registered with a Newcastle GP
