Our ‘Drop in’ pregnancy testing service for women aged 18 and over is currently suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions.
If you are aged 18 and over and think you may be pregnant then the first option would be for you to buy a pregnancy test from your nearest pharmacy or supermarket.
Pregnancy tests that you can buy are just as reliable as the ones that you access via the NHS.
If it is not possible for you to buy your own pregnancy test you can ring New Croft Centre on 0191 229 2999.
The reception staff will take your contact details and a member of the clinical team will return your call later that day. They will call you from a withheld number and because of the volume of calls we deal with will only be able to make one attempted call.
If you do not hear back the same day it may be because our staff simply ran out of time to return all the calls received. Or they may have attempted to contact you and you missed the call. If this is the case, please call again the following day.
We’ll need to know the first day of your last period
The clinical team will ask you for the date of the first day of your last period to work out when would be the right time to do the test. They may also check whether you wish to use emergency contraception if the timing allows and you don’t want to be pregnant.
A pregnancy test can take up to 3 weeks to become positive after unprotected sex.
We will ask you to collect a pregnancy testing kit from the New Croft Centre in order to perform the test at home. The kit will include instructions about how to do the test at home. A text message will be sent to your mobile phone giving you a time to attend to pick up your kit.
You must wear a face covering to attend the service and only come into the building on your own. Any companion will be expected to wait outside.
If you are trying to become pregnant the clinical team will be able to give pre-conception advice over the telephone and include information with the pregnancy test.
If you do not want to be pregnant they will provide information on your options in case the test is positive.
What if I’m younger than 18 years?
If you are aged 17 or less and feel you need a pregnancy test we would prefer to see you face to face to carry out the assessment and discuss the result with you. You can ring New Croft Centre on 0191 229 2999 to arrange.
However when you are called back a detailed consultation will take place as we would prefer to take as much information as we can over the telephone. This will help to reduce the length of time you spend in the clinic when you come for your appointment.
Alternatively we have a young people’s drop in clinic on a Wednesday afternoon where you could pop in and do the pregnancy test then and there.
Please see section entitled “Young People’s Clinic” on this website for more information on this service.
