Dr Christopher O’Brien is a Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician at the Great North Children’s Hospital specialising in cystic fibrosis, long term ventilation, sleep disordered breathing, and complex airway abnormalities.
Dr O’Brien qualified from Guys Hospital London in 1986 and after a number of jobs including primary care, entered paediatric training in the North East in 1991.
He did his tertiary respiratory training in Brisbane Australia and was appointed as a general and respiratory paediatrician in Newcastle in 1998. From a baseline of nothing he has established sleep medicine, long-term ventilation and developed the flexible bronchoscopy and complex airway service in the North East over the last 15 years.
Research
After considerable development work over the last 15 years, including periods of management activity (head of general paediatrics and medical lead for commissioning at the Great North Children’s Services), Dr O’Brien is pursuing a long-term research interest into the physiology of respiration with a project looking at high flow nasal oxygen therapy.
