The Commercial Enterprise Team is a key part of Newcastle Hospitals’ strategy. There are a range of opportunities to explore – research and real world evaluation, education and training and developing partnerships and collaborations with commercial companies.
Supporting innovation is a core function of the Commercial Enterprise Team and a key part of the Trust’s five-year strategy.
We provide a supportive framework aimed at improving services and opportunities for efficiency and growth across the Trust. All revenue created from commercial activity is reinvested into the trust to ensure we continue to deliver cutting-edge healthcare to exceptional standards.
Why choose Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals?
Rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for the second consecutive time in 2019, we have a long history of providing high quality care, clinical excellence, and innovation in medical research regionally, nationally and internationally.
We are proud to be the country’s second largest provider of specialised services, supporting people with a range of rare and complex medical, surgical and neurological conditions, cancers and genetic disorders.
We also provide a range of flagship services delivering excellent care supported by state-of-the-art diagnostic services in radiology and pathology and are a catalyst for innovation to support pioneering clinical practice in the NHS.
We are leaders in healthcare research and development across a wide range of specialisms delivering benefits not only for today’s patients but for generations to come.
Much of our work is underpinned by a world-class programme of research and innovation for which we have an enviable reputation. This has been strengthened through a range of partnerships including:
- The North East and North Cumbria Academic Health Science Network (AHSN)
- National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) including the NIHR Innovation Observatory
- Northern Health Science Alliance
- Newcastle Health Innovation Partners (the region’s Academic Health Science Centre)
- The Newcastle NIHR Med Tech and In Vitro Diagnostic Cooperative (MIC) and
- Diagnostics North East (DXNE)
We have a great track record of working with organisations to broaden and strengthen local and regional partnerships. Our ecosystem is further enriched by other world leading assets such as the Campus for Ageing and Vitality, the National Innovation Centre for Ageing, and the National Innovation Centre for Data.
The region also has a well-established life science sector (almost 200 companies employing 7,000 and contributing upwards of £1.1 billion), which actively collaborates with the NHS and academia.
The team at this specialist lab at The Biosphere in Newcastle Helix is working on the next stage of Covid science, speeding up the development and use of new diagnostic tests and technology. Their focus is on co-ordinating capability and ideas across different sectors and they can provide unique access to facilities designed to accelerate the mass development, implementation and use of improved diagnostic testing.
This is to combat the COVID-19 pandemic now, and in the longer term provide greater resilience for fighting future pandemics. Scientists at the lab can accelerate the development process by providing access to everything needed to safely develop the test for use.
This includes a high-tech testing and simulation area and access to a bank of biological samples for research. The work of the innovation lab is supported by the Department of Health and Social Care and the Innovation Lab’s links with industry range from the local to the international.
